Lapis Lazuli/Pyrite Pendant Necklace 925 Sterling Silver
Lapis Lazuli/Pyrite Pendant Necklace 925 Sterling Silver
This pendant is made of Afghanistan Lapis Lazuli/Pyrite and hand wrapped in 13 gauge sterling silver wire.
Lapis Lazuli is a deep blue metamorphic rock prized as a gemstone for thousands of years. It is not a single mineral, but a combination dominated by lazurite (which gives it its intense royal blue color), along with calcite (white), pyrite (gold flecks), and small amounts of other minerals such as sodalite and diopside. Lapis forms when limestone undergoes contact metamorphism, typically in regions where magma intrudes into carbonate-rich rocks. The most famous and historically important source is the Sar-e-Sang mines in Afghanistan, which have produced high-quality lapis for over 6,000 years. Other deposits are found in Chile, Russia, Myanmar, and the United States.
Pyrite, also known as “fool’s gold,” is an iron sulfide mineral with the chemical formula FeS₂. It is recognized for its metallic luster and pale brass-yellow color, often forming cubic, octahedral, or pyritohedral crystals. Its name comes from the Greek pyr, meaning “fire,” because it produces sparks when struck against metal. Pyrite forms in a wide range of geological environments, including sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, as well as in hydrothermal veins. Major deposits are found in Spain, Peru, Italy, China, and the United States. Size: 1 1/2" x 3/4".
